CO-OP Network, the national network of credit union ATMs, has grown steadily since being founded in 1981. A group of California credit unions combined their resources to create a cooperative financial network to expand their reach and create one of the first independent ATM networks. Today, CO-OP Network is the nation's largest network of credit union ATMs and retail point-of-sale terminals with 25,000 + ATMs and 1,867 member credit unions.

Historically, credit unions, mostly chartered as not-for-profits, have had very few branches and ATMs as compared to for-profit financial institutions. However, during the last decade, credit unions have reinvented themselves as fully-integrated financial institutions to respond to the needs of their members. To help credit unions compete in this new landscape, CO-OP Network offers access to a surcharge-free ATM network that spans the U.S. and Canada.
