(January 10 - Latham, NY) – Albert D’Orazio, 74, former New York State Credit Union League board chair, died Tues., January 8 in Cheektowaga, N.Y.
Born in 1933, D’Orazio was a director from the Buffalo chapter and served as League chair from 1999 – 2001. He also served as past chairman of both the Governmental Affairs and Bylaws Ad-Hoc Committees of the League and was a member of the board of directors of CUC Mortgage Corporation and CUC Management, Inc.
D’Orazio first came to know credit unions in 1952 when he was 18 years old and a new employee of the National Biscuit Company in Niagara Falls. He wanted to buy a car, but didn’t have much money. A co-worker told him about Shredded Wheat FCU, the company’s credit union.
He got his loan and more. Al became captivated by credit unions and their mission to help everyday people like him. He began volunteering at the credit union. In 1963, he helped organize Local 36 AFGM FCU in Cheektowaga, serving as the credit union’s secretary and then treasurer for more than 30 years.
League President/CEO William J. Mellin expressed his sorrow following D’Orazio’s passing.
"On behalf of the League, our condolences go out to Al’s family," Mellin said. "Al was always ready and able to represent the credit unions of New York State when he served as League director and chairman of the board. He continued that commitment to the credit union movement until he passed. He will be missed by all who knew him."
D’Orazio is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy; sons, Thomas, Daniel and Nicholas; daughter, Tina; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
