Credit Union Hall of Famer Passes
(January 14 - Latham, NY) – Anthony P. Bax, a 45-year credit union veteran, passed peacefully at his home in Lewiston, NY on January 12, 2008.
Bax was born in Niagara Falls in 1918. Among his many accomplishments, he is credited with saving a credit union. In 1986, when sponsor Carbon Products closed its doors, regulators suggested that Greater Niagara FCU locate a credit union to merge or look into liquidation. As the credit union’s volunteer treasurer/manager, Bax instead recommended to the Board that the credit union try to go it alone.
With their okay, Bax led the effort to find office space and recruit new select employee groups. Today, the credit union has more than 5,000 members and assets of more than $18 million.
Meanwhile, Bax became influential at the chapter and state level. He joined the Niagara Chapter Council in 1976, where he served in a variety of positions, and was elected to the New York State Credit Union League’s board, serving on many of their committees during his tenure (1991-2001).
Over the years Bax won many national credit union awards. For his life’s work with credit unions, he was inducted into the New York State Credit Union Hall of Fame in 2003.
"The League notes with sadness the passing of longtime credit unionist Tony Bax," said William J. Mellin, president/CEO, New York State Credit Union League. "He served credit unions with the same dedication and passion he gave to our country when he volunteered with the Navy during WWII. Our sincere condolences go out to Tony’s family. He will be missed by all who knew him."
Bax is survived by Anne, his wife of 71 years, daughter Sharon, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The New York State Credit Union League (NYSCUL) has served as the trade association for the state’s credit unions for 91 years. It is the fifth largest league in the country. New York credit unions have assets of more than $39 billion and 4.2 million members. To learn more about the League, visit www.nyscul.org.
