Senator Smith Joins CUs for Breakfast

(April 30 - Latham, NY) – An intimate group of credit union leaders, together with League representatives, had an informal breakfast with State Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith (D-Metropolitan) last week in New York City.

The meeting was arranged by the League to further educate the Senate Minority Leader on the credit union difference and the value New York credit unions bring to millions of New Yorkers.

Issues reviewed during the gathering included allowing depository choice, the Excelsior Linked Deposit Program and the Banking Development District Program.

"Smaller, more personal events like this breakfast with Sen. Smith are just another way to give our credit union leaders more one-on-one opportunities to network and advocate with influential state leaders on issues important to them and to credit unions across the state," said William J. Mellin, president/CEO of the New York State Credit Union League. "After hearing from the collective, the Senator appeared to be very interested in helping credit unions move those initiatives forward."

Credit union participants included: Brian Clark, CFO, and Evan Gotlob, Bethpage FCU; Robert Nemeroff, marketing director, and Marion Smith, assistant treasurer, Melrose CU; Darlene Greene, manager/CEO, New York Times EFCU; Shirley Jenkins, board of directors, Municipal CU; Mark Johnson, CEO, Qside FCU; Rossana Creo, exec. Support analyst, John Lewis, Esq., SVP/general counsel, Corporate Affairs, and Liz Philippe, pubic relations liaison, United Nations FCU; and Bogdan Chmielewski, CEO, and Paul Sosnowski, general counsel/VP Compliance, Polish & Slavic FCU.

William J. Mellin, president/CEO; Michael Lanotte, SVP/general counsel; and Amy Kramer, VP, Governmental Affairs, represented the League.

The New York State Credit Union League (NYSCUL) has served as the trade association for the state’s credit unions for 91 years. It is the fifth largest league in the country.
