(June 19 - Latham, NY) –U.S. Representative Gregory W. Meeks (D-Metropolitan) recently participated in a credit union roundtable event held by the Metropolitan chapter of the New York State Credit Union, and hosted by Melrose CU in Queens.
Alan Kaufman, president of Melrose CU, introduced Meeks to participants from more than 10 credit unions that gathered to speak with their congressman about issues facing their credit unions and their members, what type of outreach they are doing in their respective communities, and how the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA, H.R.1537) and other legislation could impact credit unions.
Meeks, a previous CURIA co-sponsor, is one of 10 members of New York’s congressional delegation to sign on to the recently introduced 2007 CURIA bill. Meeks reiterated his support for credit unions and vowed to do what he can to advance CURIA during the 110th Congress.
"Credit unions are important to me, because they are important to people," Meeks said. "By strengthening credit unions, we strengthen the community."
Also participating in the roundtable were staff from the offices of State Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith (D-Metropolitan) and State Assemblyman William Scarborough (D-Metropolitan). Representing the League were Community Development Coordinator Juan Fernández Ceballos and Legislative Analyst Cheryl Halter.
There are approximately 47,000 credit union members residing in Congressman Meeks 6th congressional district.
The New York State Credit Union League (NYSCUL) has served as the trade association for the state’s credit unions for 90 years. It is the fifth largest league in the country.
