Buffalo & Niagara CUs Hold Joint Legislative Reception

(October 2, Latham, NY) – Four New York legislators recently attended a legislative reception held jointly by the Buffalo and Niagara chapters of the New York State Credit Union League. Representatives from an additional six legislative offices were also present at the gathering, which took place at the Classics V in Amherst, NY.

Attending to meet with and speak to the more than 40 credit unionists in attendance were Senator Antoine Thompson (D-Buffalo/Niagara) and Assemblymen Dennis Gabryszak (D-Buffalo), Jim Hayes (R-Buffalo/Niagara) and Jack Quinn (R-Buffalo).

Each lawmaker was introduced and recognized for their support of credit union friendly legislation, which included Senators Mariarz, Rath, and Thompson’s co-sponsorship of 2007’s Tax Refund Anticipation Loan legislation; Senator Volker’s sponsorship of the 2006 Subpoena "Spam" legislation; Assemblywoman DelMonte’s sponsorship of the Municipal Depository Choice bills and Congresswoman Slaughter’s co-sponsorship of CURIA.

The lawmakers then took the opportunity to express their gratitude to the group, both for their support and for the important role their credit unions play in their respective communities.

The offices of U.S. Congressional representatives Tom Reynolds (R-Buffalo) and Louise Slaughter (D-Buffalo/Niagara); Senators George Maziarz (R-Niagara), Mary Lou Rath (R-Buffalo) and Dale Volker (R-Buffalo); and Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte (D-Niagara) were also represented at the reception.

"We were very pleased that so many representatives made it a point to be there or to send a representative from their office for our Legislator Night," said Marie Betti, CEO, Western New York FCU, and a League Board Member. "With everyone so busy these days, especially the lawmakers, the casual, friendly atmosphere at the event was particularly welcome by all."

Attending on behalf of the League, were SVP and General Counsel Mike Lanotte, VP of Governmental Affairs Amy Kramer, Credit Union Growth and Development Specialist Marge Kazz, and Advocacy Specialist Allison Doney.

The New York State Credit Union League (NYSCUL) has served as the trade association for the state’s credit unions for 90 years. It is the fifth largest league in the country. New York credit unions have assets of more than $37 billion and more than 4.1 million members. To learn more about the League, visit www.nyscul.org.
