International Credit Union Week Celebration Ideas

Plan Something Festive At Your Credit Union

  • Hold an open house at your credit union and branch offices.
  • Conduct tours and serve refreshments. It’s a wonderful opportunity to build relationships and discuss your credit union’s products and services.
  • Invite your elected officials to a "Meet the Members" day, or visit their local offices.
  • Sponsor a "new member drive" where prospective members can come for refreshments and to learn more about the credit union.
  • Focus on Education

  • Distribute financial self-help information in your lobby and at the drive-up windows.
  • Offer your credit union as an elementary/primary school field trip destination.
  • Teach a basic money management class at a local high school.
  • Give teachers an opportunity to build real-world experience into their students’ math lessons. You can get free educational materials through the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE – www.nefe.org).
  • Plan free member education seminars for members of all ages.
  • Focus on the Credit Union Difference

  • Organize a fun event to teach your staff and members about credit union history and philosophy.
  • Plant a tree, sponsor a community clean-up, hold a bicycle and/or car seat safety clinic.
  • Reward employees for exceptional service to members. Recognize members for exceptional service to the community.
  • Raise money for credit union development. While celebrating at your credit union, consider collecting pocket change for the New York Credit Union Foundation or other worthwhile causes.
  • Promote Your Products and Services

  • Offer loans or new share draft accounts for a reduced fee, or for the same fees the credit union charged the year it opened.
  • Work cooperatively with other local credit unions to purchase advertising space.
  • Be sure to take photos if you do have a visual activity. Send copies (a photograph or high-resolution jpeg format-300dpi), with your activities reporting form, to Bonnie Sklar at the Association, credit union trade publications and to your local outlets.
