Five credit unions (GHS FCU, Horizons FCU, Sidney FCU, UHS EFCU, Visions FCU) in the Southern Tier chapter of the League, and the chapter itself, supplied the funding for six automated external defibrillator (AED) training units for the local chapter of the American Red Cross. The units, which help save the lives of those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, are used to help train students taking CPR, AED and first aid classes at the Red Cross. In recognition of the donation, the Red Cross presented the group with a plaque. Visions FCU sponsored two teams of volunteer bowlers for the Annual ARC Pin Crushing Bowling Tournament that supports the Broome/Tioga ARC Day Habilitation Program. Becky Barrett, from Horizon’s Lockheed Martin branch, was on a streak, winning both the women’s high single with a 205 and the women’s high triple with a 599. Representatives from Visions FCU, GPO FCU and the USDA break ground on a new state-of-the-art soccer complex that will serve over 300 children, plus have the ability to host numerous community events. The three entities are financing the large sports dome for the Rising Stars Soccer Club, a non-profit organization that brings children from various communities together as one. (1/26/07)

Horizons FCU held a barbecue that raised $650 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Employees pitched in by barbecuing the chicken and putting together the take-out meals. One employee even donned a chicken suit and a sign to attract those driving by. (10/6/06)

The Southern Tier chapter of the NYSCUL took home the “Most Creative” award during an ice cream topping contest for their “Memories and Possibilities” topping, a combination of both traditional and modern toppings on a banana split, which evoked childhood memories while looking ahead to the future. The event was part of a fundraiser for the Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference held August 8. Volunteers from Empire FCU, GHS FCU, Horizons FCU, Sidney FCU, SEFCU, UHS EFCU and Visions FCU also lent a hand at the event serving ice cream, parking cars, and more. This is the fifth year the chapter has participated in the event. (8/30/06)

Eight credit unions* from the Southern Tier chapter of the NYSCUL have donated $8,500 to several charities that aid children. The money was raised through the League’s Credit Unions Care for Kids program.

A group of seven employees from Horizons FCU braved the rainy weather to walk a 5K course to raise awareness and funds for the Southern Tier AIDS Program’s (STAP) Annual AIDS walk in Binghamton. The credit union was also a sponsor of the event. (7/19/06)

To celebrate National Credit Union Youth Week (April 23-29) Horizons FCU held a special contest for young members, aged 3 to 17, to encourage them to save money by making deposits into their savings accounts. Horizon FCU’s President/CEO, Mario DiFulvio,  presents the lucky winner, 8-year old Kathryn Wills, with $50 to deposit into her savings account. (5/26/06)

Credit unions from the Southern Tier chapter of the New York State Credit Union League volunteered at a live television auction to raise money for WSKG-TV, Binghamton’s public broadcasting station, on March 23, 2006. Participating credit unions included: Empire FCU, GHS FCU, Horizons FCU, Sidney FCU, SEFCU, UHS Employees FCU and Visions FCU. (4/25/06)

Four employees from Horizons FCU volunteered at MDA’s “Spaghetti on Ice” fund-raising dinner on January 15 at the Holiday Inn Arena. Members of the Binghamton Senators AHL hockey team act as dinner servers at the annual event. Horizons’ volunteers then raffled off the jerseys worn by the players, stopping briefly to take a picture with the team’s mascot. (2/3/06)

Stephanie Garrison, vice president of marketing for GHS FCU in Binghamton recently returned from 15 days of Red Cross work in the hurricane ravaged New Orleans area. Garrison is pictured with other volunteers as they prepare to deliver hot meals to impacted areas.

Five employees from Horizons FCU took time out on Thanksgiving Day to volunteer at the annual Binghamton High School Community Thanksgiving Dinner. The group, together with other community volunteers, prepared take-out meals, helped deliver meals to area homes, and helped clean-up after the dinner. Two of six Horizons FCU volunteers paint a common room used by guests at Danielle House as part of United Way of Broome County’s Day of Caring on September 9. Danielle House provides low or no cost temporary housing to out-of-town family members of patients staying at local medical centers for extended periods of time. (1/4/06)

For the fourth year in a row, members of the Communications Council of the Southern Tier district participated in the 46th Annual Ice Cream Social to raise funds for the Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference. The organization provides emergency assistance to children who have been neglected, abandoned, abused, or suffer from mental or emotional disorders. From their ice cream topping efforts, the group raised $500, which they donated on behalf of the district’s “Care for Kids” program. (11/8/05)

As part of Horizons FCU’s “Family Fun Fridays,” the Ross Park ZooMobile made a visit to the credit union with an array of animals, including a falcon, snake and an armadillo. “Family Fun Fridays” provided recreational and service activities to kids and their families throughout the month of August. Fifty-five employees, family members and volunteers from Visions FCU participated in the American Heart Association’s Walk/Run, collecting $6,192 to help fight heart disease. The credit union also sponsored volunteer t-shirts and provided free popcorn to all attendees. Longtime Visions’ employee, Shari Bell, initiated the Survivor’s Ceremony with moving testimony about her winning battle with congenital heart disease. (7/27/05)

Horizons FCU raised $1,573 for the American Cancer Society’s 2005 Relay for Life. The money was raised through a variety of fundraisers, including: a gift basket raffle, 12 “Jeans Days,” a car wash, a bottle and can drive, and seven bake sales in the lobby of Horizon’s main location. Employee volunteers from credit unions in the Southern Tier district helped spruce up the area around Exit 70N on Route 17 in Johnson City as part of the state’s Adopt-A-Highway program. The district has been adopting its area along Route 17 for the past 10 years. (6/24/05)

As part of GHS FCU’s efforts to help local food pantries, the credit union held a March Madness food drive. Employees were encouraged to donate foods beginning with the letter “M.” Vice President of Marketing Stephanie Garrison shows some of the 75+ pounds of “M” food collected. (4/8/05)

Steve Gardner, president/CEO, GHS FCU, is cooking up omelets for his staff to benefit local food pantries. Each month, the credit union features needed food items. At the end of the month, staffers donating the featured foods are treated to a meal prepared by senior management. (2/25/05)

For the seventh year, Visions FCU sponsored and participated in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 3rd. The credit union's 43 walkers raised more than $6,500 for the cause. (12/10/04)

Throughout the month of August, the Broome County branches of Visions FCU held a “PX Supplies from Home” drive in conjunction with United Way’s Day of Caring.
