Legislative visits are a critical component of the Annual Business Meeting and Governmental Affairs Conference. Meetings with lawmakers enable the New York State credit union community to enhance the strong relationships and support that we have collectively built with our legislators. By speaking with our elected representatives in person, we have the opportunity to inform them on credit union issues as we advance our 2008 state legislative agenda. But legislative visits do more than just educate legislators on the “credit union difference.” They are unique opportunities to demonstrate the strength and unity of the New York State credit union movement. Every individual who has an affiliation with a credit union––be it management, staff, volunteer or member––has a voice in advocating on behalf of our movement and helping shape our future by promoting credit union-friendly legislation. And each of you has a distinct story to tell, about the ways in which your credit union has helped your members and reached out to your communities, all in the name of service, not profit. You embody the “people helping people” philosophy, both individually and collectively, every day in your service to others. You give New Yorkers the resources and tools they need to attain economic self-sufficiency on the road to financial independence. When we gather from chapters throughout New York State to share these stories with our elected representatives or their staff, we show our collective strength and send a powerful message to the state’s decision-makers: that we stand together on legislation preserving our niche in the financial services marketplace for the benefit of the 4.2 million New Yorkers that we serve. In addition to GAC, the League’s Annual Business Meeting is a time for credit unions to discuss important League business and to have a say in the future of your League. Be sure to attend and let your voice be heard on key issues impacting our organization. Your support for the Annual Business Meeting and GAC demonstrates your commitment to your credit union, League and your statewide movement. I look forward to seeing you at the Annual Business Meeting and GAC.
