Annual Statewide Scholarship Winners Announced (April 9 - Albany, NY) – Eighteen impressive college-bound students will be receiving scholarships through the New York State Credit Union League’s 2008 annual Scholarship Program.
This year the League will be awarding a total of $11,500: five $1,000 scholarships and thirteen $500 awards. Scholarship applicants competed against other credit union members across the state. Judging was based on their academic performance, extracurricular and community activities, and an essay question.
“The League is proud to be able to support the combined academic and community efforts of some of New York State’s finest high school seniors as they prepare to go off to college for the first time,” said William J. Mellin, president/CEO of the League. “All the applicants should feel extremely proud of their achievements and know that each of them is the type of student who will make a contribution to their employers and their communities when they embark on their professional careers.
High school seniors who belong to a credit union and were planning to attend college for the first time were eligible for the scholarships. One hundred and two credit unions participated in this year’s Scholarship Program, submitting a total of 1,237 applications. The winners came from 9 of the League’s 14 chapters. Many chapters and credit unions will also be awarding their own scholarships.
